To create a climate in Virginia where peers are empowered to understand and find their own recovery through programs that achieve: a) personal transformation, b) community transformation and c) systems transformation.
Over the past year VOCAL has completed or exceeded every deliverable set forth in our contract with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and we have done so within our budget. Some highlights include Virginia's only statewide conference created by and for those in mental health recovery; training our peers to lead self-help groups and start independent programs; working in collaboration with other agencies to advocate for effective mental health policy; and participating in the Governor's Task Force for Mental Health in the 21st Century.
VOCAL consistently strives to increase awareness of mental health recovery and work for the full human rights and self-determination of every individual. At this time we are seeking $10,000 for an artistic project that gives opportunity for expression and lends visibility to the reality of what it is like to have a mental health diagnosis.
VOCAL was founded in 1999 with the vision to achieve a peer-driven mental health system in the state of Virginia. Inspired by successful programs in other states and the motto, "Nothing About Us Without Us," VOCAL initiated a statewide organization for people in mental health recovery.
