Background MEGA Mentors was created in 2009 when the Superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools asked African American community leaders to be role models for students. The goal was to improve academic performance, increase graduation rates, and reduce disciplinary issues. This was the catalyst that ignited the formation of MEGA Mentors – Mentors Expecting Greater Achievement. Since that time, the program has grown from supporting 20 students to now providing mentors for as many as 500 mentees in seven Chesterfield County middle and high schools. The mentors engage with the students in groups as well as individually and follow a structured curriculum of 75 lessons centered around the core values of respect, responsibility, effort, and achievement and related to enhancing leadership, self-confidence, and academic success.
