Impact

Arts in the Middle launched its inaugural two day Fine Arts Festival on the grounds of historic Hewick Plantation in May of 2015.

The Arts in the Middle Festival brought the arts to Middlesex County in the following ways:

  • 100 professional juried fine artists from 11 states displayed and sold their creations.
  • 25 local artists, many of whom were showing their work for the first time, collaborated on a display and sale of their art in a “Local Artist Pavilion.”
  • Five musical groups representing traditional and contemporary musical genres were hired to perform free for the public at the festival and in the town of Urbanna.
  • Seafood and other regional specialties were sold to the public by local restaurants.
  • Young visitors were invited to judge the artwork and award special ribbons to their favorite artists.

The committee of volunteers who produced the Arts in the Middle Fine Arts Festival formed a committee to establish a Board of Directors and the organization became incorporated in October 2015 as Arts in the Middle, Inc.

Arts in the Middle, Inc. sponsored an educational activity for children as part of the Urbanna Oyster Festival in November 2015.   With the help of volunteers, children built, decorated and floated small wooden boats in a pond at Urbanna Harbor.

Arts in the Middle, Inc. has begun a collaboration with the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society Visitor’s Center to plan art exhibits and other cultural activities at the Visitor’s Center.

Needs

  1. Arts in the Middle needs to increase the marketing of the Arts Festival and other events.
  2. Funding is needed to bring music and other artistic performances to Middlesex County.
  3. Funding is needed to offer arts programs at low cost to a broad audience.

Background

Arts in the Middle was a loosely organized group of citizens interested in promoting the arts in the summer of 2014 when Middlesex County and the Town of Urbanna received an incentive grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to support an art event in the county. The 2015 show goal, was to bring together artists from the Middle Peninsula and beyond to showcase their works, to demonstrate the impact the arts can have on smaller communities and to celebrate the creative spirit in rural Virginia.  The show included:

  • 100 professional juried fine artists from 11 states displaying and retailing their creations in tents along Artist Row;
  • 25 local artists working collaboratively (many for the first time) to display their work in a Local Artist Pavilion;
  • Five musical groups performing throughout the two days in a large hospitality tent;
  • Craft beers, wine and soft drinks sold to help fund the show;
  • Cuisine from area restaurants in the hospitality tent;
  • Local sponsors.

The success of the show, which drew about 1,150 visitors, clearly demonstrated the importance of an organized effort to promote visual, performing, culinary and other arts in Middlesex County and the surrounding region and led to the creation of a formal organization to advance and support the arts in Middlesex County.

After the success of the 2015 show, the volunteers turned their energy to formalizing the structure of Arts in the Middle.  With state incorporation achieved, an official board appointed and elected officers, achieved IRS tax exempt status and with state charitable organization tax status pending, the group is poised for a successful second annual outdoor show and other events and activities that will add cultural and artist enrichment to the county.

In November, 2015 Arts in the Middle, Inc. sponsored a successful children’s educational event at the Annual Urbanna Oyster Fest.  Families of young children purchased, built, decorated and floated small toy wooden boats in a pond constructed for the occasion. This will become an annual event for the organization.

Arts in the Middle has also begun working with the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society Visitor’s Center Art Program to recruit and support artists in opening their own local arts, crafts, music and local food retail section in the building in exchange for volunteering to staff the Center.  This is in the very beginning stages.
