Mission To ensure the building, known as the Ware Neck Store and Post Office, not only survives, but also thrives, for future generations by preserving the building and maintaining a strong presence in Ware Neck through outreach, education and community activities. In 2012, FOWNS acquired the Ware Neck Store and Post Office, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. FOWNS leases the first floor of the building to Nuttall Store and to the U.S. Post Office.
Impact A capital campaign is under way. FOWNS' long-term capital improvement plan will require more than $200,000 in donor contributions to restore and preserve the historic aspects of the building, make more space available to the public and make the building more accessible.
Needs Develop a community center for Ware Neck; septic and restroom restoration; paint and restore the exterior of the building; modify the back stairway to the second floor to improve access; install a state-of-the-art emergency generator; rehabilitate the kitchen; and install a high efficiency HVAC system. In 2013, the restoration of the exterior of the building was partially completed, the stairs were modified, and the installation of the emergency generator was completed.  The restoration of the kitchen and the installation of the high efficiency HVAC system were initiated in 2014 and completed in 2015.
Background Citizens of Ware Neck saw a need to preserve the Ware Neck Store and Post Office building as an historic landmark and had it approved for the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. Further, in order to preserve a location for the activities of this vibrant community, they decided to form FOWNS as a vehicle for fundraising for the building and for outreach, education and community activities.

The pressing challenge is building maintenance and improvement. To this end the board has developed a capital campaign prospectus, which can be found on the Management Tab/Fundraising section. Building financial support is a related goal. Organizational visibility in the community is also being developed.

CEO/ED/Board Comments FOWNS has pulled together a rural community which had in earlier times been drawn together only to pick up mail and buy milk at the Ware Neck Store and Post Office. FOWNS has inspired the spirit of volunteerism in our community. Local residents feed the house cat and water the porch flowers. Local contractors have been active in donating their goods and services. The FOWNS tenant, Nuttall Store, has a community lending library, quarterly social gatherings, Santa Claus at Christmas with free hayrides for families, and live music events.
