Impact
During
this past year, Legal Aid Works’ 45th year of service, we persist in our efforts
to make a significant impact within the communities we serve. Despite the continuation of inadequate
funding in serving the needs of our clients, Legal Aid Works leveraged staff, board and
volunteer resources to sustain our services, improve our infrastructure and
management processes and attract new supporters through the use of technology,
multimedia communications and unique events. In addition to our individual client services, Legal Aid Works also provided timely
and essential information at clinics held in several communities
on the subjects of housing, wills and consumer debt. Legal Aid Works was previously awarded a grant which enabled us to provide monthly
mobile outreach in Kilmarnock to the residents of Lancaster and Northumberland
Counties to assist disabled clients with Social Security Disability appeals
obviating the need for them to travel 84 miles roundtrip to our Tappahannock
Office.
Needs
Our most pressing need is unrestricted, sustained funding for two bilingual attorney positions, especially in the housing (evictions and foreclosure), consumer and disability benefits areas. Each position will cost us, including benefits, $60,000 per year. We need volunteers to assist us in a focused and aggressive fundraising effort. We are always in need of dynamic new board members who can bring a variety of professional experience to bear on Legal Aid Works' mission: legal experience, wealth management, marketing strategies, communications, nonprofit management, etc.
Background
Legal Aid Works (formerly Rappahannock Legal Services) has a proud history starting in 1973. We are the law firm for poor people who cannot afford a private attorney. Our services are offered free of charge. We help indigents protect their rights and fight for justice. Our staff of 21 employees, as well as many volunteers work hard to ensure that access to our system of justice is not reserved just for those who can afford to pay for a private attorney. We represent clients who are victims of domestic violence; whose benefits have been wrongly denied in disability or employment cases; and those who face homelessness through wrongful evictions or foreclosures. We assist clients in consumer problems like unfair debt collections and wrongful wage garnishments. Our service area extends from the mountains of Madison, Culpeper and Rappahannock Counties in the West and eastward along the Rappahannock River watershed to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. We have three offices to serve this large area, located in Culpeper, Fredericksburg and Tappahannock.
CEO Statement
...Because Justice Really Should Be For All! We are legal professionals who really care about equal justice for all. In our current civil justice system, unlike in the criminal justice system, there is no right to be provided with an attorney free of charge when you face a civil legal matter (unlike if you are charged with a crime). So our advocates fight every day for the little guy, the underdog, the under-served who are not able to navigate the complicated and intimidating court system on their own. Every day, we see lives transformed by the power of the law, giving hope to domestic violence victims, saving families from homelessness, and restoring benefits that had been illegally denied. Our mission makes a real difference in people's lives by allowing them to enforce their legal rights. It is an inspiring place to work, and it is a great way to use a law degree! When you support Legal Aid Works, you are supporting the "justice for all" ideal that you have repeated every time you say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Areas of Service
We serve King William, King and Queen, Richmond, Lancaster, Northumberland, Westmoreland, Essex, Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Orange, Culpeper, Fauquier, Rappahannock and Madison Counties, as well as the City of Fredericksburg and Town of Colonial Beach. Our offices are in Tappahannock, Fredericksburg and Culpeper.
