Background
Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester (LVG) has been a presence in the community since 1981. Since its inception, LVG has trained tutors for adults who wished to improve basic reading skills.

In the early 1990s, a basic skills and GED program was begun at the Gloucester County Jail. This program continues to be a strong component of our services; LVG continues to be the sole provider of direct instructional services to inmates in Gloucester. Starting in 2013, LVG began a partnership program with Virginia Cooperative Extension to also provide financial literacy workshops to Gloucester inmates.

As our county began to see an influx of adults for whom English is not their native language, we began offering help with English as a second language (ESL). We have seen this program gradually grow and it is very active.

In 2006, LVG expanded its program to offer instruction to adults who wanted to prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) test. We continue to provide these services, working cooperatively with Rappahannock Community College.
