Impact
The program committees of Hands Across Middlesex achieved significant success in serving Hands clients through services offered by each program.

The Food Pantry provided food to approximately 303 households with a total of 545 individuals receiving food in these households monthly.
The ramp committee constructed 8 new ramps and repaired two ramps.
The Home Repair committee assisted 27 families with repairs to roofs, floors, water systems, railings and exterior surfaces, and replacement of doors and siding.

The Clothing Closet provided seasonal clothing to approximately 120 individuals each month and the Furniture Barn provided furniture items to approximately twenty eligible clients each month.

Financial assistance was provided to 108 clients with a total of $20,403 in assistance provided for electrical, gas, fuel and other emergency needs.

Needs
Continued community support is necessary to enable Hands Across Middlesex to continue its mission. Our current financial times have resulted in more requests for our services.
  • Become a Back Pack Buddy Sponsor.  Your checks for $200 will support one student for the entire school year.  Your gift of less than $200 will be combined with others.
  • Become a volunteer in the Clothing Closet. Give just a few hours once a week or once a month to sort and display clothing for our clients on Tuesdays through Fridays.
  • Create a "Home Repair Team" in your church or civic group that would be available once or twice a year to help complete home repair projects in your neighborhood. Register your "Home Repair Team" by calling Hands or contact your Hands church representative.
  • Donate all your gently used clothing to the Clothing Closet, especially children's clothing.
  • Donate funds to be used to assist your fellow citizens in their time of need.
All donations are tax deductible.
Background

Hands Across Middlesex Interfaith Outreach, Inc. held its first official Board of Directors' meeting at Calvary Baptist Church in October 1992. The first board meeting was to create an organization that would allow churches in Middlesex to pool their human and financial resources so that they could better meet the needs of residents in Middlesex County.

The following individuals were founders: Bud Rutkowski, Jack and Jane Fackler, Purcell Scott, Joe and Janice Green, Bob Evans, Betty Bray, O. C. Shank, Ruth Wilder, Carroll Holmes, and Sid Stallings. The following officers were elected: Bud Rutkowski, President; Pricilla Scott, Vice President; Ann Dunn, Secretary; and Betty Bray, Treasurer. The by-laws were approved and Hands Across Middlesex was officially established.

The main focus of Hands was to improving living conditions for Middlesex residents. Within a few years, Hands had built six homes and completed renovations on about 20 additional homes. In total, over $350,000 of work was completed for housing in Middlesex. In 1994, housing construction was turned over to Habitat for Humanity. Our Clothing Barn was set up under the leadership of Jane Fackler. The Furniture Barn was started with Annette Greenwood as chair.

Hands participates in the building of ramps for disabled residents of Middlesex County. Perry Mason helped design modular ramps that could be easily removed when no longer needed.

Another project is the WIN (Water In Now) program to insure homes have both running water and septic service.

Tina Ammons took over the duties as Treasurer and, with the help of Carol Palmer, started a Food Pantry in her basement that served several families each month. Around the same time, the Furniture and Clothing Barn were moved to the old cafeteria building at Cook’s corner.

In January of 2010, with the opening of The Cryer Center, came the ability of Hands to both work with other organizations and expand its outreach to our citizens.

As Hands enters its third decade of service, its future is bright. From several volunteers in the beginning, it now has over 100 and reaches over 300 families  each month.
