Mission  The object and purpose of the Goochland Christmas Mother Association is to provide a Christmas for Goochland County residents who would otherwise not have a meaningful Christmas.  It takes many volunteers working together to shop, wrap and deliver gifts and donated food, clothing and toys to hundreds of county residents who would otherwise be unable to share in the joy of Christmas.
Impact
For 58 years, the Goochland Christmas Mother effort has made Christmas meaningful and happy for many county families and recipients of all ages. Each year, county residents apply to the program and are qualified based on residency and need.

Applicant families have an opportunity, through the application process, to request specific needs for each member of the household, such as clothing, household items, or toys for children. Volunteers shop for and wrap items based on those requests. Each household also receives a package of food items and household staples, as well as a gift card to buy perishable foods from a local grocery store. The program provides this combination of purchased and donated items to each qualified recipient based on funds available each year.

The 2016 Christmas Mother Program supported 262 families in Goochland County.  Of those, 180 families were supported directly by the Christmas Mother, while 82 families were “adopted."  The program received the support of many area businesses, churches, organizations and families who adopted one or more applicant families, providing Christmas for their adoptees on behalf of the Christmas Mother.
Needs
While financial contributions are critical to the success of the program, contributions of volunteer time and supplies are also key. Items vital to success each year include:
  • Financial support in the form of monetary donations.
  • Businesses, organizations or families able to adopt one or more applicants.
  • Volunteer hours to help with shopping and wrapping.
  • Donations of canned goods and lightly used or new clothing and toys.
  • Supplies of wrapping paper and tape.

Items supplied through donations help to raise the level of funds available to support our families in need.
Background  The Goochland Christmas Mother initiative began in 1959 and has been successfully serving those in need through an annual giving campaign that culminates on delivery day, when approved recipients receive their packages. A county resident is chosen each year to serve as the Goochland Christmas Mother, the public representative of the Christmas Mother Association. The Christmas Mother leads the fund raising effort, and raises the visibility and public awareness of the program during the campaign season through community outreach.

Short Term Success
The 2010 Christmas Mother Program supported 379 families in Goochland County, representing 813 adults and children.  Of those, 304 families were supported directly by the Christmas Mother, while 75 families were “adopted."  The program received the support of 47 area businesses, churches, organizations and families who adopted one or more applicant families, providing Christmas for their adoptees on behalf of the Christmas Mother.
Long Term Success
The Goochland Christmas Mother Association strives to effect change in the lives of our recipient families by providing food, clothing and other essential items at the holiday season.  While our efforts are concentrated during the Christmas season, the assistance we provide is long reaching.  We also assist with prescription costs for applicants, firewood for residents heating by wood stove, and coordination of household repairs for residents who request this service.
