Mission
The Gloucester County Public Library System promotes reading, fosters lifelong learning and provides informational, educational and cultural resources.  The Gloucester County Friends of the Library support this mission.

Impact
The Gloucester Friends of the Library plays an important role by helping the county library system remain an essential resource for the community.  The Friends have helped to lessen the impact of governmental budget cuts that can have a detrimental impact on the functions of the library.   The Friends played a big role in the move to a new branch by providing money to purchase equipment, furniture and books.  The Friends attempt to keep pace with technological advances by providing financial assistance to purchase e-Books.  The Friends are a primary source for funding numerous library programs for all ages.  Because of the monetary support from the Friends the library maintains a wide variety of program offerings throughout the year.  The Friends hope to continue funding the present programs as well as new ones that the library desires to implement in the future.
Needs
The business of the Friends is books.  Much of the money that is raised each year comes from selling donated books.  Many of the books are sold everyday at our book store in the Main Library and the rest of the books are sold in special sales throughout the year.  In order to carry out this process we need volunteers to sort, categorize and box the books.  We need volunteers with trucks!  We need volunteers to perform such jobs as publicity, bookkeeping and correspondence.  There is a hardworking core of volunteers that do these jobs but the numbers must increase.
Background

The Friends of the Library is a volunteer, non-profit organization established in 1983 to supplement library resources.

A $5 membership supports library services and programs and provides funds for books and other materials.

Monetary contributions and memorials are welcomed.

The Friends accept donations of new and used books.

Join the Friends today!  New faces, new ideas, and new volunteers!

Board Chair Statement
During my time with the Friends of the Library, I have been most impressed with the volunteers I have had the good fortune to meet.  While I have been associated with other groups through the years, I have never been involved with a more dedicated, loyal, hardworking group of people.  The present core group has achieved numerous impressive successes.   Whether it was attempting to move books in a pouring rain for a special sale or unloading and sorting an unexpected large truck full of donated books, they always get the job done.  The problem is that these overworked people need more help!

While finding more volunteers to continue meeting the challenges for helping the library do its job is a concern, the Friends also need to explore new ways to raise funds.  Selling books has worked for many years, but increasing costs and the ever-changing needs for maintaining a vital library system means that more funds will be needed in the future.  Tapping other sources for funding is something that needs to be a priority.  Because of the commitment of our organization, hopefully we will be able to overcome this obstacle and continue our quest to achieve a fully functioning library system that will be a valuable asset to the county.
