Impact

Last year we spayed/neutered over 3300 animals. This resulted in fewer unwanted and homeless pets in our local shelters and allowed owners to keep their pets at home. Our clinic also provided pro bono preventative/wellness care to homeless pets in local shelters and rescues, resulting in increased chances for adoption. We also worked extensively with rescuers to provide spay/neuter and vaccination services to community cats which prevented more feral cats being born, improved the health of the altered cats and protected both cats and the humans around them by vaccinating the cats against rabies.

Our primary goal is to increase the number of surgeries and services that we can offer at no or reduced cost to owners and groups that cannot afford even our low fees, in an effort to further reduce the number of unwanted, neglected, abandoned and surrendered pets. This year, we applied for and have received grants from PetSmart Charities, Gloucester Community Foundation, River Counties Community Foundation and the Treakle Foundation. All of these funds have or will be used specifically to provide spay/neuter and immunizations to cats and dogs at the ARF Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Needs

Our greatest need is to be able to provide spay/neuter surgeries and legally required immunizations for any dog or cat who needs it and each year 33% of our clients request financial help, even with our already low prices.  Donations of any amount will allow us to assist those owners and ensure that their pets are altered and protected from contagious and fatal diseases, which saves their lives, keeps them at home, and prevents unwanted offspring.

Background Animal Resource Foundation (ARF) was founded in 2003 by a dedicated group of volunteers whose goal was to reduce the population of free-roaming cats and to assist the low-income public with their vet expenses, particularly spay/neuter and vaccinations.  It quickly became apparent that a more direct approach to ending the births, and subsequent deaths by abandonment and euthanasia, of unwanted pets was needed.

In 2008, the ARF Spay/Neuter Clinic, based on the Humane Alliance Model of Spay/Neuter Clinics, became a reality. Since then we have spayed and neutered over 28,000 dogs and cats, preventing the births of literally hundreds of thousands of puppies and kittens. Our specially-trained and highly experienced medical staff, following the "gold standard" protocol of Humane Alliance, perform 25-30 surgeries per day.

Our clients are citizens of the large rural and urban geographical area we serve, as well as local shelters and rescue organizations. We also provide pro bono wellness and preventative care for homeless animals in some of the shelters/rescues. We not only prevent unwanted births, we save existing animals' lives by making it possible for them to stay in their homes and by improving homeless animals' opportunities to find new forever homes.
