Background

What is GiveRichmond?

GiveRichmond provides access to in-depth information about area nonprofits, including financial, governance and programmatic details. Powered by GuideStar, and supported by The Community Foundation staff, the database is the largest collection of Richmond area nonprofits available.

This powerful philanthropic tool is a resource for nonprofits, donors, funders or anyone interested in the essential services provided by our vibrant nonprofit community. Through this site, visitors will be able to access information and make credit card contributions to local nonprofit organizations. All services are completely free to the public and to participating nonprofits.


What is Guidestar?

GuideStar’s mission is to revolutionize philanthropy and nonprofit practice by providing information that advances transparency, enables users to make better decisions and encourages charitable giving.

GuideStar connects people and organizations with information on the programs and finances of more than 1.8 million IRS-recognized nonprofits. They serve a wide audience including individual donors, nonprofit leaders, grantmakers, government officials, academic researchers and the media.

Why does The Community Foundation support GiveRichmond?

By sharing knowledge through GiveRichmond, we hope to inspire confidence in donors, strengthen nonprofit organizations and increase the awareness of local philanthropic organizations.

 

Does The Community Foundation endorse organizations?

The goals of GiveRichmond as a platform are in line with the mission of The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia to serve and inspire people to build philanthropy for our region and engage in our community. In addition, we hold among our core values the opportunity to work with others to develop and share community knowledge and to achieve greater transparency. That is the central role of GiveRichmond in the community.

GiveRichmond is not a charity evaluator or a watchdog. We collect, organize, and present information about local nonprofits while remaining neutral.



Portraits

What is a nonprofit portrait?

Today’s donor wants accessible information in order to make strategic giving decisions. GiveRichmond portraits are designed to offer a wealth of knowledge so you can give with confidence. You will find everything from contact information to financial charts to details about programs. The information is self-reported by area nonprofits. The Community Foundation staff confirms that the minimum fields are complete and enters financial data to ensure consistent presentation. Portraits are required to be updated at least annually.

 

What does the "Reviewed" icon mean?

This means that the nonprofit organization has a complete portrait. All of the required fields have been completed and the organization has provided all of the relevant financial information. Portraits have to be updated annually to remain current.


What does it mean if an organization does not have the Reviewed icon?

Newly-formed charitable organizations that do not have at least a 2-year operating history may have a portrait on GiveRichmond. In addition to program and board information, The Community Foundation relies on the organization’s application for tax exemption to the IRS (Form 1023). These organizations are not assigned the Reviewed Icon until such time as their financial practices can be documented.


Where does the financial information in a portrait come from?

Information provided in the financial section of each profile is entered by The Community Foundation staff. The Community Foundation receives financial documents from nonprofits, including the IRS Form 990 (the return of an organization exempt from income tax) and financial audits, reviews or compilations. Our staff analyzes the financial documents and enters financial figures into GiveRichmond. The original financial documents are provided in the portrait for your review. The nonprofit’s Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer has an opportunity to comment in the financial section. These comments can be very helpful in understanding nuanced financial trends and changes within the organization. Does The Community Foundation guarantee the accuracy of data?

The narrative information in each profile is voluntarily provided by the nonprofit. GiveRichmond does not guarantee the accuracy of any such data, make any representations or warranties with regard to nonprofits in the database, or verify they are in compliance with all state and federal requirements. However, we will seek to include the most accurate data available through document verification and a due diligence process.


Why are some nonprofits not included?

GiveRichmond contains portraits of 501(c)(3) public charities in Virginia, with primary emphasis in Central Virginia. The database does not contain portraits for religious organizations operating for religious purposes (i.e. churches, synagogues, mosques). If your favorite organization is missing, we welcome the opportunity to assist them in creating a portrait. Get started here.



Donations


Is my information protected when giving through GiveRichmond?

All communications initiated by donations are transmitted via Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The SSL protocol is the industry standard method for creating an encrypted, secure connection between your web browser and a web server.


Are there fees associated with GiveRichmond?

Fees associated with GiveRichmond are assessed by third-party vendors. The Community Foundation supports GiveRichmond as a complimentary service to the community and does not assess any fees.

2.75% + $0.57 of each gift is assessed for credit card processing fees charged by Sage Payment Solutions.

$1.49 per transaction covers fees to online donation software provider Kimbia.
